1972, and today there are no permanent residents — only traces of a community that once

lived entirely from the sea.

Qoornoq can only be reached by boat from Nuuk, passing through one of the largest fjord

systems in the world. Along the way, the landscape feels untouched and remote, with long

stretches of water, drifting ice, and dramatic mountain walls rising directly from the sea.

Once a small but active fishing community, Qoornoq had houses, a fish processing plant,

and even a small railway system used for transporting fish along the shore — a rare sight in

Greenland’s history. Over time, like many smaller settlements, it was gradually abandoned

as people moved to Nuuk during a period of major change in Greenland in the mid-20th

century.

Today, Qoornoq stands as a quiet reminder of that past. Colorful houses still remain on the

shoreline, slowly being reclaimed by nature, creating a unique atmosphere where history

and wilderness meet. In summer, some of the houses are still used by families from Nuuk,

bringing brief moments of life back to the settlement.
