Illu Majuala

About this lodge

Imagine waking up to views over Nuuk Fjord as the morning light hits the mountains across

the water. The silence is only broken by birds moving over the fjord and the slow movement

of ice drifting through the Arctic landscape.

Welcome to Illu Majuala.

Located high above Kapisillit, this is one of the best-positioned cabins in the Nuuk Fjord

system. From here you have a wide view over the fjord, the settlement below, and the

surrounding mountains — including Kiinaasaq, the highest mountain in the Nuuk area at

1,653 meters.

This is a place for those who want to experience Greenland at close range.

The journey starts in Nuuk

The experience begins before you reach the cabin.

From Nuuk, we travel by boat through the Nuuk Fjord system on a journey of around two

hours towards Kapisillit. Along the way, the landscape opens up with steep mountain walls,

deep fjords, and drifting icebergs of different sizes.

It is not unusual to see sea eagles above the boat, while seals appear between the ice. On

calm days, the mountains reflect in the water and the view changes with every kilometer.

For many guests, the boat trip is one of the highlights of the stay.

When arriving in Kapisillit, we arrange ATV transport for luggage and supplies up to the

cabin so you can settle in without hassle.

Kapisillit – Greenland’s salmon settlement

Kapisillit is one of the most unique places in Greenland.

The name means “the place with salmon”, and the area is known for the Kapisillit River —

the only river in Greenland where Atlantic salmon naturally migrate to spawn.

The settlement is surrounded by mountains, rivers, valleys, and fjords. There is no road

connection to other towns. No traffic, no crowds, no noise. Only nature and local life exist

side by side.

It is a place where time moves differently.

Things to do around Illu Majuala

Kapisillit River

From the cabin you can hike to the Kapisillit River. The walk takes around 30–60 minutes

through open landscape and mountain terrain.

The river is known for its seasonal salmon run.

Pingu mountain

For those looking for a more demanding hike, Pingu rises above the settlement. The climb

can be steep in sections, but the view from the top covers the entire fjord system.

The ice fjord area

A longer day hike leads towards the ice-filled fjord areas. Here you will often see icebergs

drifting close to shore.

On quiet days you can hear the ice moving and cracking in the distance. With some luck,

seals can be seen resting on the ice.
